It could be a word that you were practically convinced didn’t exist. Or the opposite: one which you use every day and then find out you’ve invented yourself. It could be the song that you least expected to fall in love with (or to), the move that all the world say you’d really like, that in the end was a big let-down, or that unforeseen surprise that comes waltzing into you room one day (a visitor?). Things change back and forth, white becomes black, black is white, and the grey, yellow. With just an accent or inflection things can reverse, a hyphen can make all the difference and countless other details make or break the day. But at the end, what’s truly important is the reality that each person builds and lives in: one when “only” me has none of the inflection of “lonely” me, where he’s still here or where Michel Gondry doesn’t make 3-D films with box-office aspirations. Exactly.

opening It’s alive! Alive!

2008 was the year that Polaroid finally announced that it was ceasing to produce films for its cameras. It had a multitude of fans at that time, and since that fateful date their numbers have multiplied even more. Nevertheless, they didn´t let melancholy get the better of them, and they used all means within their grasp to mount a campaign supporting their beloved Polaroid, which could never be replaced by digital photography, until they achieved the commercial reintroduction of the films in March 2010. For this reason Polaroid and its fans deserve the expo dedicated to them in the KKKB, an exhibition of small formats where you can enjoy these jewels up close, with no effects, without gimmicks, with the simplicity and truth that is so well reflected in the immediacy of Polaroids./ María Arranz Trans. by Kate Bell

Long before the term “art” was invented, people painted on walls as a way of expressing themselves, and this has continued until today. Murals was an exhibition at Fundació Joan Miró that showed how several contemporary artists use this medium nowadays. Today, you can enjoy the screening of Murales, a documentary and making-off of the exhibition by director Pilar Pérez Solano. She captures the creative process and the individual context of each artist, as well as the way they interact. They are as varied as: a cooperative of women from the soninke ethnic group from Mauritania, an ex-op ed art editor at The New York Times, and two artists who paint all over La Latina and Lavapiés, in Madrid. There are 8 more, all from different cultures. Being able to see how they managed to communicate is interesting enough; imagine the privilege of spying them as they get inspired, influence one another and, of course, put it all on the wall./ Marta Bausells

Fernando Alfaro. Yeah, the guy from Surfin’ Bichos, Chucho, Mercromina and the Alienistas. The same one who disappeared for a while, off chilling out and keeping out of the tabloids. And now he is back, with a record in the works, a few concerts planned, and he’s returned sans Alienistas or Bichos. It´s just him by himself, leaving the disguises behind. It’s all been a gradual development, he has gone through three bands which delayed this process, but in the end, he has decided to use his own name to present himself. The format of the concert at the Fantástico event will be unplugged, which is very much in line with what he´ll be doing from now on. He has a few new songs which, according to us, he´ll be released on an album sometime this year. But what the heck, we are talking about Alfaro, and those are major words, he’s got the highest of pedigrees of Spanish indie music. Listen. Private spaces that change. A lack of people. Objects that tell stories. Natural light. This is Harlem seen through the eyes of Susanna Pozzoli. And this is its process of gentrification. A process that has been happening for years. Rich people new to the city who raise living standards. And locals of scant economic means who are forced to move house. It´s not new, but the 66 photos of all the houses on the stretch of 121st Street between Lenox Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard are. Want to see inside Harlem? cycle Super-symmetry

In the classical culture which was the cradle of our Western culture, already on tenterhooks over ill omens, symmetry was a benchmark of beauty. And so to this day it remains, even more so now that image is not only fiercely prominent, but practically carries its social monologue into all walks of life. But image is also a place for creation and all the more so when it is united with auditory stimulation and is blown away by any source of sound, including electronic. Music and image via computers are already among us, even when we´re not aware of it, and they have yielded great works and genuine creative benchmarks. Espai Cultural Caja Madrid presents the series “Supersimetría”, proving to us that an image is worth as much as a sound, so imagine how much its word is worth! / Juan Carlos Romero Trans. by Kate Bell

Mi grandmother says a few things, but well said. She worries if I don’t go to Benicàssim this year, and she would freak out if she saw my living room. But that’s her. Ernest Crusats, a guy from Vic, says and sings that he wants to be like his grandmother, live without hurry and cook delicious meals. I agree. Doesn’t matter that he’s the new jewel of catalan folk (like 4t-1a or Manel), or that he has won the latest edition of Sona 9. I’m sure Ernest’s grandmother is proud of him and his songs. And so would be mine. They have something of nostalgia and warmth, caress and whisper. And what better place to discover it than the new set of concerts organized by Dimelorápido guys. If mine lived in Barcelona, I would bring her./ Aleix Ibars

Ángel Corella is the Fernando Alonso of dance. And not because he is snob to some, not at all, but because he’s a winner born in Hispanic lands. And generous him, he’s left a legacy through his company Corella Ballet Castilla y León, offering a highly competitive space to any ballet dancer wanting to make a career there. A good example is the unprecedented “Solea pas de deux” in Spain, by María Pages and music by Ruben Lebaniegos, that according to Dance Europe is one of the best shows in the world in 2010, premiering at the City Center in New York. This piece, “for 4” (another premiere), this, a piece for four ballet dancers made for “Los Reyes de la Danza”, and “Suite de Raymonda (with a medieval setting and based on Hungarian folklore), from the London Royal Ballet, complete this incredible date with a good dance./ Francisco Estrada Trans. by / Susana Sarsfield

Absolutely no excuses needed for heading to this event; two of Barcelona’s most promising underground groups in concert, playing together. But if you still need one, here you have it: 7 inchers, or vinyl singles folks (as it bloody well should be): one the one hand, the explosive ¡Pelea! who after their cassette demo (there’s balls for you) now they’re presenting their first record for those of you that left your Walkman behind some time ago, including their anthem ¡Pelea! On the other, Kana Kapila are still going with their tropical lo-fi gig and this time, apart from debuting the songs from their next 7”, they’re saying goodbye to Elsa, who’ll be playing with them for the very last time. They promise to wreck her guitar, tambourines and glasses as a farewell. Ukeleles too perhaps? It’s a must see./ Iu Peña Trans. by Aoife

Even though Oscar Wilde´s theater plays are considered to be excellent classic works, we must not forget that many of his poems and novels have also been adapted to the big screen or staged into theater plays. That is the case of “The Portrait of Dorian Gray”, considered one of the last classical works of gothic terror, and which tackles the idea of everlasting youth. Written during the times of the severe moralistic Victorian era, Wilde didn’t hesitate to openly express his own ideas about beauty and esthetics; which brought him many detractors and criticism, and led to his end… A similar situation experienced by the main character of his book, the alter ego of the writer. La Companyia de l’Art has rescued this classic piece and turned it into a more realistic adaptation where the ongoing flow of actions keeps the audience´s attention until the curtain closes./ Albert T.Riera Trans. by Carol

The framework is important, at least at the beginning, and especially for Marco Polo or Aurelio. But these former times and we should focus on the future. The future, in theatrical terms, very often has nothing to do with the official future, and, in that respect, theaters like l´Antic Teatre of Barcelona deserves to be visited quite often, because its contribution to the cultural scene tends to offer staging without traps or cardboard stiffness. They perform pure theater, like when La Lupe sang on the other side of the ocean. Their program is loaded with good stuff. Besides the return of Medea (à la carte) by Esther Freixa, we´ll also be able to see “El so del taronger” by Neil Harbisson and Moon Ribas, a whole experience about the color and the deception of perceptions. The reality dictated to us by our senses is deceptive; however, it seems to determine our lives. And is love in the air? / Juan Carlos Romero Trans. by Carol

Muslim art is beautiful. The symmetry and definition of its shapes, the sense of proportion and its rhythm. I mean, who do you know that hasn’t stood speechless in front of La Alhambra, or la Mezquita in Córdoba, stupefied by the colours, textures and their harmony. Today then, it’s well worth taking a look at the work of Golsana Heshmati, from Teheran, who through her photography and designs has decided to depict her own vision of the taboos of the Muslim society, particularly those laid upon woman. It’s quite an eye opener, and goes deeper than you may originally think./ Noelia Aparicio Trans. by Kat

A question that anyone living in the coolest Barcelona’s underground scene would like to see answered is why such name for a radio show: ”Diasderubias”. We’re going to reveal it. At its start, that show was a section in another – already gone – show, named “Días de Lluvia” which they’ve started to replace. Before recording the show, the guys would go for a few beers and talked about girls and when the time of truth came, on the mic and with a nice buzz, a lapse was committed and lluvia became rubias. And they found it funny! Now they’re throwing a party at Nitsa with another show which name lacks mystery and is clear. And we’re cheering for them to reach their target and tell us where Magnum is. I say lurk, because Sandwell District is super secret; you won’t find a website, a Myspace page or an address, so you can pretty much guess what Summer and Regis’ philosophy is on that front. What’s a dancer got that a granny or kid doesn’t? And if you swap the order around of asking who’s got what the others don’t, you’ll have three distinct questions. And the answer to these three queries comes not in the form of a mouthful of words, but rather a choreography : “Kontakthof”, by the mythical Pina Bausch. First debuting in 1978 with dancers from her cast, then a later response came with people 65 and older in the year 2000. Almost a decade later, the same experiment has been carried out by adolescents 14 and older. And this is what we’ve got in store for us now: the masterful hand of this elegant fraulein expressed through these near-children, directed as if by Pep Guardiola, to forge a steely confidence in themselves (which is an absolute must for dance and life). Bausch and her many versions: “What sophistication do geniuses enjoy, right?” ./ Francisco Estrada Trans. by Don Vito

Xcèntric: Telemach Wiesinger

Gigantic rusty metal bridges swinging over the waters of the northern sea. Harbours open to the vast sea push us on a journey to the old Continent. A sweeping gaze pauses on the mortified nature, that take us back to Jia Zhangke’s famous work. Colossal handmade constructions lying quietly, but not everlasting. Black and white forgetting the grey, farewell to nuances. An eye that sees all and can’t be seen. Late capitalism blurred in black oxide. Things that come and go; that come in and leave, never to return. Telemach Wiener traces a poetic narrative in the format of a documentary that reflects on the current economic system, in the century of programmed obsolescence with an imposed expiry date./ Santi Gila Saurat Trans by Susana Sarsfield

It’s been ten years since Guy Ritchie jumped out of the big screen with his fantastic film Snatch. And with it, set the style for not a few aspiring directors, who have tweaked the originality, and added their own master touches – or not so much – to the basic ingredients: flashbacks, slow motion, bullets flying everywhere: urban hardcore against an intense soundtrack. Neon Flesh is a perfect example, an irreverent mix of action and black humour in the latest European neothriller genre, which coming from the talent of the producers of Cell 211, projects an exciting no-holds-barred plot that is reminiscent of a Tarantino serving of RocknRolla or Trainspotting, ground up with a good dollop of macabre and and the juice of several Almodovar characters./ Eva A. If there’s one figure that towers over the world of cinema, it must be Orson Welles, who dominated pretty much all areas of cinematic creation. Toward the end of his life, Welles gave a final twist to his filmography with F for Fake, a fake documentary of a profound personal reflection on art, using a collection of characters who made fraud their way of life. But the film also portrays a self portrait of Welles, who put himself into the same category. This is a brave film, ahead of its time both technically and in narrative, that could be a loaded promise from a creative genius who, curiously, kick started his career with another clever trick, the radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds./ Miguel Ibáñez Monroy Trans. At this rate, no one between the ages of 19 and 25 is going to reach 30, and I’m not just saying it because of the recession that is forcing people to go out on the streets and beg for a living. I’m merely saying it because the economy will be in an even worse state of affairs than it is now, and you probably won’t even have enough money to eat, BUT however, you’ll still want to go out and have a good time, and probably more so now than ever before. This, my dear friends is where Fantastic Tuesdays can help. I suppose the experts say that it’s not good for us to go out so often, but when we’re being offered such delights as LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Cut Copy and Justice, it’s hard to believe that going out anything but good for us. Secrets and dreams of… BlablabLAB We’re four friends who by chance found ourselves together in a workshop at Hangar in 2008, and decided to form a collective, blablabLAB. Which means… it’s a recursive acronym, ironically of Laboratorio Adisciplinar Blablablab. And what do you all do? We imagine strategies and invent toots to confront society with its poly-faceted and complex reality, sometimes with political will and with lo-fi technology available to everyone. What do you want to achieve? Survive without ever being bored, living it up and learning continuously. The project Be Your Own Souvenir was selected by the Arts Santa Mònica… In it, we reward the people who cross over the line from spectator and become in a casual performer (as a human statue) with an ironic souvenir of themselves in three dimensions. Your ideal Ramblas would be… spread throughout the city. In Sarrià, el Carmelo, Les Corts, Nou Barris,.. You would spend hours and hours talking with… Allan Turing developing an intelligent machine. The next project is… most likely it will be Haberlandt in Antigua Casa Haiku, in May. A dream… lucid: “sanity is a madness put to good uses; waking life is a dream controlled” (Jorge Santayana). And a secret… blablabLABwill finish with lorem ipsum.
